'Sounding Borders' - Public Engagement in Resesarch Project is in its Curatorial Stages

Sounding Borders

‘Sounding Borders’ (2022-2023) is a research and practice-based project that questions how borders are shaped, controlled and embodied through sound. The public research events have been taking place in Lincoln and included a listening workshop with a sound artist and researcher Pedro Oliveira, an interactive soundwalk, a critical excursion, a sound writing workshop, a listening walk and an exhibition. Audiences have been listening to local-global borders, exploring how everyday public and private spaces are policed and bordered sonically. The events aim to reflect critically on their migration experiences and the materiality of borders. The project, working at the intersections of sound studies, creative practice and decolonial geopolitical debates, engage the public in questions of sound, community and globality.

Public Lecture: Breaking the Silence: Women in Sound @ Goldsmiths, May 2018

Women in Sound

A presentation by Sandra Kazlauskaite: Breaking the Silence - The Histories of Women in Experimental Music and Sound Art.

The lecture will address the silenced histories of women in experimental music and the sounding arts. It will explore how women artists’ conceptual approaches to sound and technology have informed their sonic thinking as well as their artistic practice, and will discuss their contribution to the field more broadly. The existing histories of experimental music and sound art, as the lecture will argue, is still framed in gendered and gendering terms. It continues to be told and re-told from a primarily masculine position. Certain bodies, including the bodies of women’s and those who identify themselves women, have been repeatedly ignored and excluded from the experimental music and sounding arts institution: from performance halls, from gallery spaces, from books… Their input has been continuously deemed as less important and insignificant. In the lecture, I will argue that this issue needs to be addressed and will call for a more inclusive approach to sonic histories. Through case studies and historical re-evaluations, I will turn to the voices and the bodies of women who have utilised sound in the artistic practice and will demonstrate how their work has continued to shape the field. In the lecture I will also argue that women’s work with sound and technology has always been a political project - a mission to confront and subvert the masculine “techno-fetishism” behind music and sound production. I will showcase how women artists working with sound have been able to surpass the limitations of technological determinism, offering more expanded interrelations between subjects and the world. To do so, I will turn to the theories of embodiment and feminist writing and will propose for women’s relationship to sound making as anti-essentialist, embodied and sonically expanded.

Sound Performance: 'Processing', 43 Inverness Street Gallery, Panacea Exhibition, 2015

"Like eating an imaginary apple, our hybrid human like bodies are formed to constantly digesting information, permanently inputing and outputting knowledge. We no longer have one mouth to eat, but thousand virtual nurturing holes, feeding us with raw particles of data. Can the unprocessed become an opportunity for new forms of life? A group of digital artists and musicians are gathered to present their observations on the digital body as a mean to cope with unprocessed memories. Collaborating with 'Panacea' exhibition project, the event elaborates those issues through their audiovisual works and live music/dance performances."

Programme Note: Discovered at the edge of the world (North of Iceland), this analogue radio signal has become a living memory of the remote place where it was initially recorded. It portrays the location’s continuous effort to remain connected to the rest of the world using the notion of live sound. The participants are invited to explore this signal, utilise its compositional potential, and using the microtonal qualities provided by the installation’s dial, reconnect to the possible distant place where the signal was first captured.
